Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya: The European Work Routes Open to African Skilled Workers in 2026

For skilled professionals in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, 2026 offers more legal routes into Europe than at almost any earlier point. Germany lists more than 160 shortage occupations, Ireland has published a 24-sector Critical Skills Occupations List, and the EU’s planned Talent Pool names nursing, electrical work, welding, plumbing, construction and heavy-vehicle driving among its target occupations. The challenge is no longer whether a route exists. It is choosing the right one and getting in front of a real employer.

Germany: the widest range of routes

Germany combines several pathways, and which one fits depends on your qualification:

  • EU Blue Card for university graduates with a qualifying job offer. The 2026 salary threshold is €50,700, or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations. See our full EU Blue Card Germany 2026 guide.
  • Skilled worker visa for people with recognised vocational training in shortage trades such as electricians, plumbers and welders.
  • Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), a points-based visa to look for work in Germany without a job offer. Details in our Chancenkarte 2026 guide.
  • Recognition partnership route, which can let you start working while your qualification is still being formally recognised, provided an employer commits to the process.

For nurses, Germany’s Triple Win programme is a government-backed recruitment channel that we cover in our article on nurses and caregivers recruited into Europe. The same principles apply to qualified nurses from West and East Africa.

Ireland: the easiest English-speaking option

Ireland is often cited as the most accessible English-speaking destination for skilled African workers. Its Critical Skills Employment Permit covers 24 sectors, including healthcare, engineering, ICT and finance, and the employer applies for the permit on your behalf. Salary thresholds and the family benefits are covered in our Critical Skills Employment Permit guide.

The United Kingdom: established, but stricter

The NHS has long recruited nurses from Nigeria and Ghana, and that route still exists. But the wider Skilled Worker system has tightened, with higher salary thresholds, a degree-level requirement for most roles and a higher English level. Read the details before you plan around it in our Skilled Worker Visa UK 2026 guide.

The EU Talent Pool: coming, not yet open

The EU is preparing a Talent Pool platform for workers from outside the bloc. It is not a visa and it does not guarantee entry, and national immigration rules still apply. Our article on the EU Talent Pool 2026 explains what it is and what it is not, so you can prepare now without waiting for the launch.

Protect yourself from fake agents

Where there is demand, there are scams. Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay for a guaranteed job, communicates only on WhatsApp, or cannot show you a real, verifiable employer. Real routes need a real employer, and no genuine platform can guarantee you a visa or a contract. We explain how to check a platform in Jobito: scam or legitimate?.

The real bottleneck: being found by a real employer

Almost every route above depends on an employer who is ready to start the process. That is where Jobito comes in: a verified profile, with identity check, interview and video presentation, becomes visible to European recruiters. Creating a profile is free to start. Visibility is not a job offer, and results depend on your profile and on demand for your occupation.

How to get started

  1. Match your occupation to the shortage lists in Germany, Ireland or the UK.
  2. Check your qualification recognition requirements for your target country before you apply.
  3. Start language learning early. German at A2 or B1 opens many more doors in Germany.
  4. Create a verified profile on Jobito and keep it up to date. Our guide to the best app for finding a job abroad walks through the steps.

2026: more routes, but preparation decides the outcome

Europe needs nurses, electricians, welders, drivers and engineers, and several governments have opened legal routes for them. The candidates who benefit are those who match a shortage list, prepare their documents and make themselves visible to employers early.
